About MapCraigs
- Location is an essestial feature of real estate. While many MLS websites display
listings on a map, CraigsList does not. MapCraigs brings this convenient mapping
feature to Craigslist housing ads.
- This site was motivated by my frustration at trying to determine the location of
Craigslist housing ads. MapCraigs saves time by locating each listing on Google
Maps™.
Why the "Please Wait" page?
- MapCraigs must retrieve and search each CraigsList™ listing for address information.
This takes approximately 1/3 second per listing (much faster than you can do it).
- To reduce your waiting time MapCraigs stores address information in a database after
it is retrieved. Once a listing is in our database we do not have to search the
listing again.
Why some listings are not Mapped
- Address information must be entered into the address field when the item is posted
on Craigslist. MapCraigs cannot find addresses that are randomly located within
the body of the listing.
- Google Maps cannot find some addresses. Streets and towns may be misspelled or sometimes
the address format cannot be deciphered by Google.
- All listings are displayed by MapCraigs. Listings that cannot be
mapped are listed below the map under the headings "Addressess not found" and "Listings without
addresses."
Other details
- Listings are deleted from the database after approximately one week.
- MapCraigs checks for new listings every 15 minutes.
- It includes all U.S. Craigslist™ sites, including individual regions within large cities.
- Other CraigsList™ mapping sites do not include small towns (such as my town, Bellingham
WA), their data is days or weeks old, or they do not include all housing categories.
- Revenue from Google adWords will, hopefully, pay for hosting.
- Thanks to CraigsList™ for the use of its housing information and Google Maps™ for
the use of its mapping API.
- This site is not affliated with CraigsList™ or Google Maps™.
- Please send suggestions, complaints, and praise to csandvig@gmail.com
™ trademarks of CraigsList and Google Maps, respectively.
